Endodontic treatment is the procedure commonly known as a “root canal therapy“. A root canal therapy is one of the most common dental procedures and allows patients to preserve their natural teeth even when they have been severely damaged.

The soft tissue inside the teeth is called the pulp, which consists of blood vessels and nerves. If the pulp becomes infected or necrotic due to trauma or a previous infection, it is removed using specialized endodontic instruments. The root canal that was in contact with the infected tissue is then cleaned with antiseptic solutions and mechanically shaped so that it can be sealed hermetically. This procedure is always performed under local anesthesia to ensure a painless treatment.

The use of a dental dam is now considered an essential requirement for a successful outcome, while simultaneously protecting the patient from the chemical solutions used during the root canal procedure.

After the root canal procedure is completed, the tooth can be restored with a filling if there is minimal damage, or it may require a post-and-core build-up and a crown if there is significant loss of tooth structure.
